Ford Transit 250 Towing Capacity Options

The Ford Transit provides a couple different performance options, which means you can select between a few different towing capacities.

At the very peak, the 2020 Ford Transit 250 can tow a maximum of 6,800 pounds. That maximum is reached when you use the 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 engine and have the van in rear-wheel drive configuration as opposed to all-wheel drive.

If you have the Passenger Van trim with all-wheel drive and the standard 3.5L engine, you'll have the lowest possible towing capacity of the model at a still respectable 4,000 pounds!

Understanding Maximum Payload

The payload figures of the Ford Transit 250 are vast. Not only will payload be influenced by the engine you have under the hood, but also by factors like the length of the van you choose and the roof height of the model. Length includes Regular, Long, and Long-EL, while the roof height can be Low, Medium, or High.

If your goal is to fit as much sheer cargo inside the van as you can, choose the Low roof height, Regular length, and standard 3.5L engine, and you can enjoy 4,030 pounds of maximum payload. Most other variations of the model will provide a maximum payload capacity somewhere in the 3,000- to 4,000-pound range!

About the Ford Transit 250 Performance

So, what's the difference between these two 3.5L motors we keep bringing up for the 2020 Transit 250?

Thanks to some re-tuning work by Ford engineers, the engines are similarly arranged yet have surprisingly different power outputs. The variation is a good way for you to land the exact style of performance you covet.

The base 3.5L V6 puts out a respectable 275 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. Going instead with the 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 ups the compression ratio and results in 310 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.
