When you're considering getting rid of your current vehicle, one good way is to trade it in to a dealership. This not only makes you some money, but it can also help you reduce the price of your next vehicle.

Not sure how to trade in your car? No problem. Richmond Ford Lincoln has put together a guide to help explain to our friends from Richmond, Mechanicsville, and Ashland, VA, what they need to do to trade in their vehicle.

Prepare Your Paperwork

The first step when preparing to trade in your vehicle is getting your paperwork together. This can include things like:

  • Vehicle title (if you have it)
  • Repair receipts
  • Maintenance receipts

Having your repair or service records can help show that you have taken good care of your automobile and that you've kept on top of maintenance. While the dealership might not ask for these, they can help you get a higher trade-in value since it means your car will be in good condition.

Bringing in vehicle accident information and repair information can't hurt, either. This paperwork shows the history and that you did get repairs done.

Clean and Repair Your Vehicle

Before you bring your vehicle in, it is a good idea to give it a good cleaning. Vacuuming the interior, throwing out garbage, and even washing your car can show that your vehicle is well cared for and maintained.

In addition to cleaning the interior and exterior of your automobile, you'll want to clean up the technology. This includes wiping your in-vehicle navigation system, disconnecting your phone from Bluetooth®, and removing garage door openers.

Another optional thing you can do to increase your vehicle's worth is complete minor repairs or routine maintenance before bringing it into the dealership.

Doing these repairs can increase your car's value and include things like:

  • Dent repair
  • Glass repair
  • Other extensive issues

You'll need to weigh the cost of repairs vs. how much the dealer might take off for potential issues to decide if it is worth paying for the repairs.

Learn Your Car's Worth

The next step is to learn what your current vehicle is worth. There are a ton of ways to do this online. Our dealership even offers an online trade-in estimator, so you get an idea of what your vehicle is worth.

Our trade-in tool is the Kelly Blue Book® Value Your Trade tool, which estimates based on Kelly Blue Book® values. We'll need some information from you, such as:

  • Year
  • Mileage
  • Engine
  • Model
  • Zip code

With this information, you'll get an estimate of your automobile's value.

Our dealership also offers an in-person trade-in appraisal. A team member will look over your car and help you get a better understanding of its worth. We can then purchase your vehicle when you meet with us.

Meet With the Dealership and Finalize the Deal

The final step is meeting at our dealership and finalizing the deal for your vehicle. After a staff member looks over your set of wheels, they will give you an offer and you can accept.

Then, you'll have to go over the deal sheet. If you like what you see, you can finalize it. Once that is done, you have three options:

  • Celebrate
  • Find your next vehicle
  • Both
