If you're the new owner of a 2021 Ford Explorer, you're probably geared up for high-riding adventures around Richmond, Ashland, and Mechanicsville, Virginia. Preventative maintenance is the number one way to keep your SUV running strong, and it's never too early to learn about your Explorer's maintenance needs so that you're prepared when the time comes.Â
That's where Richmond Ford Lincoln's 2021 Ford Explorer maintenance schedule steps in! We've bundled everything you need to know about keeping your Explorer in top condition, informed by Ford's maintenance recommendations.
Get familiar with determining your Ford Explorer's maintenance intervals and what services are required below.
Every 5,000 to 10,000 Miles or as Indicated
The 2021 Ford Explorer does what it can to keep you in the loop for necessary maintenance needs. So, when the motor oil begins to get low or starts wearing down, you'll see an indicator light on the dashboard.
About Your Maintenance Interval
Roughly 5,000 to 10,000 miles is the normal range in which you'll get prompted by the motor oil system.
If you use your Explorer for moderate- to heavy-load towing or travel through off-road terrain often, you'll be prompted by the system at shorter intervals (potentially as often as every 3,500 miles). If you just use your Explorer for everyday commuting and family duties without exerting too much pressure on the motor, your motor oil will last longer.
Services Required With Each Prompted Oil Change Message
- Change engine oil and filter.
- Rotate tires, check for wear, and measure tread depth.
- Perform multi-point inspection.
- Inspect all brake components.
- Inspect engine cooling system, exhaust system, and suspension.
- Inspect rear axle and U-joints (4-wheel drive Explorers only).
Every 20,000 and 30,000 Miles
There are a few inspections and changes that aren't needed at every maintenance visit, but rather every second or third time you take your 2021 Explorer for service.
These include replacing the cabin air filter (every 20,000 miles) and replacing the engine air filter (every 30,000 miles).
100,000+ Miles
Once your Ford Explorer's odometer reaches six digits, a few extra checks and replacements are required. At 100,000 miles, the engine coolant needs to be replaced. Thereafter, it will be changed every three years or 50,000 miles.
Every 100,000 miles, you'll also need to get your Explorer's spark plugs replaced and accessory drive belts checked for wear. After this first belt inspection, belts will be checked at every other oil change.
Every 150,000 miles, the automatic transmission fluid should be changed, and the accessory drive belts will be replaced if they haven't been changed out in the last 100,000 miles.
FordPass Connectâ„¢ Application
The FordPass Connectâ„¢ application can be downloaded onto your smartphone. The app links your smartphone to the vehicle, giving you remote access to the 2021 Explorer. Additionally, the application will alert you of any necessary service needs or give you a heads-up if you haven't been to the shop in a while!
