When searching for midsize trucks, odds are you've come across the 2021 Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado. Both Ford and Chevy are known for manufacturing powerful trucks that can get the job done.
Richmond Ford Lincoln has put together this comparison to help our neighbors in Richmond, Mechanicsville, and Ashland figure out which truck is best for them. Give it a read!
Ford Ranger vs. Chevy Colorado: Towing and Payload Capacity
When choosing which truck is the better option for you, two important aspects are towing and payload capacity.
The Chevy Colorado has three engines to choose from, each one changing your towing capacity a bit. The gas engine options give you a maximum towing capacity of 7,000 pounds when properly equipped. When you opt for the available diesel engine, you'll get a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 pounds.
In comparison, the Ford Ranger has one powerful engine option. This engine gives you more power than both the gas engines of the Colorado. The Ranger has a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds when properly equipped.
So, with roughly 7,000 pounds of towing capacity for both trucks, what can you tow?
- Midsized Trailers
- Larger Boats
- Another vehicle on a flatbed trailer
The Ford Ranger outperforms the Chevy Colorado in terms of payload capacity. The Chevy Colorado has 1,550 pounds of payload capacity. However, the Ford Ranger has a best-in-class payload capacity of a whopping 1,860 pounds. With similar towing capacity to the Colorado and a greater payload capacity, the Ford Ranger is the better choice in truck.
Ranger vs. Colorado: Off-Roading Capability
Another popular use for trucks is to hit the off-roading trails and take on the rugged terrain around Virginia. Both the Ranger and the Colorado are equipped to do this.
The Colorado trim ZR2 Bison is the off-roading trim with features like steel skid plates, 17-inch wheels, front winch provisions, and rear recovery points. It was designed for rugged trails.
The Ford Ranger surpasses the Colorado in terms of off-roading capability with its available Tremor Off-Road Package. This package includes features like:
- Front and Rear Tow Hooks.
- Magnetic Painted Alloy Wheels.
In addition to these features, the Ford Ranger also gets two systems as part of the Tremor Off-Roading Package: Trail Controlâ„¢ and the Terrain Management Systemâ„¢, which helps you tackle the toughest of terrain.
Ford Ranger vs. Chevy Colorado: Safety and Driver-Assist Features
Like many vehicles, these days, the Ranger and the Colorado offer safety and driver-assist features to make your drives a little bit safer and easier.
The Ford Ranger's safety and driver-assist suite is called Ford Co-Pilot360â„¢ suite. The Chevy has a collection of available similar features but no distinct safety suite. Some features both trucks have in common are:
- Rear View Camera.
- Lane-Keeping System.
- Pre-Collision Alert with Automatic Emergency Braking.
Where these two trucks differ is how soon you get access to these safety features. These features become standard starting at the second trim level of the Ford Ranger, while you still have to individually select which available features you would like to purchase for the Colorado.
